The REAL Christian Delusion

[Christians] need to wake up from the illusion that the America we now live in – not the America of our nostalgia or imagination or best ideals, but the real America we live in here and now – is somehow friendly to our faith. What we’re watching emerge in this country is a new kind of paganism, an atheism with air-conditioning and digital TV. And it is neither tolerant nor morally neutral.

  1. Sadly this is true…It’s not a pleasure cruise we’re on, it’s a battleship!

  2. Do you honestly believe that Christianity is losing ground to any form of religion, especially here in America?

The largest religion in the US is Christianity, practiced by the majority of the population (76% in 2008).

By the 2011 Yearbook of American and Canadian Churches, from which members in the United States are combined with Canadian members, and of the National Council of Churches, the five largest denominations are:
    The Catholic Church, 68,503,456 members
The Southern Baptist Convention, 16,160,088 members
The United Methodist Church, 7,774,931 members
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 6,058,907 members
The Church of God in Christ, 5,499,875 members
Due to its large population and history, the United States has numerically more Christians (and more Protestants) than any other country in the world.

Furthermore, there are over 38,000 denominations of Christianity in total.

But what about Atheists? The most recent ARIS report, released March 9, 2009, found in 2008, 34.2 million Americans (15.0%) claim no religion, of which 1.6% explicitly describes itself as atheist (0.7%) or agnostic (0.9%). See how low those numbers are? Christians need to be careful about their war on Atheism and paganism and gay rights rhetoric. Innocent blood need not be shed. Atheists do not kill Theists. Theists should be so inclined so as to treat Atheists with the same respect.
